6/28/2023 0 Comments Invasion by Walter Dean MyersNobody wanted to talk,” the soldier says after an officer is killed. The 1988 “Fallen Angels” told the story of the war from the point of view of a young black soldier. In one of his most popular - and controversial - books, he took on the Vietnam War. In so doing, he gave his young readers a tour of American and African American history. He took on topics as diverse as Muhammad Ali, basketball, the Normandy invasion, the Haitian revolution and the Chisholm Trail. Once he found his writing voice, Myers’ ambition became ever grander, his curiosity seemingly boundless. It was me who lay on the cot wondering if I was fooling myself.” And I knew she felt that I didn’t do anything wrong. Compassion.” Later, Steve is alone in his cell. I wanted to ask if they had found anything in it. At one point, Steve’s mother visits him in jail. “She brought me a Bible,” one of Myers’ protagonists says of his own mother in “Monster.” Steve Harmon, has been accused of murder for acting as a lookout during a robbery in which a killing is committed. It was writing clearly designed to reach people like his own stepmother, who raised him, and who loved books but who “probably read at a third-grade level,” Myers once said in an interview. His prose style was often a kind of YA noir, with staccato rhythms, punctuated with short sentences. Myers himself wrote, almost always, as if he were inside the skin of the young dropout he once was. Stuart when he was captured and taken to Capitol Prison in Washington, DC. I reached page 150 before I had a genuinely pleasurable moment. There were moments when I couldn’t stop reading and moments when I thought I could put it down and never pick it up again. That is the first word that comes to mind when thinking back on this book. I thought I would put my reaction to it here first before talking it out in book club. This month, we read Come, Thou Tortoise, the debut novel of Jessica Grant. I read it when it first came out in 2012, but went to the meeting anyway as I had enjoyed it and wanted to hear other peoples’ thoughts. I went to my first meeting last month to discuss Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World that Can’t Stop Talking by Susan Cain. I decided to take my reading out of my home by joining a book club at my local library. Secondly, he totally gets what this whole reading thing is all about. Swoooooon! First off, while writers who break the fourth wall usually aren’t my bag, this is totally my bag because he’s already reeled me in with his thankfulness. Here’s a light blanket… / I can’t stop / my gratitude, which includes, dear readers, / you, for staying here with me.” And thanks / for the corduroy couch I have put you on. A few stanzas later, he says, “And thank you, too. In the title poem towards the end, “catalog of unabashed gratitude,” he starts out by addressing “Friends” and it seems, at this point, that we are all his friends. This definitely makes me take a pause moment to moment to be thankful. Everyday movements, quite moments, elements of life we take for granted all find a place to shine here. 6/27/2023 0 Comments The lost spells robert macfarlane“This unusually beautiful book brings to readers the magic and wonder of nature … Breathtakingly magical.” - Kirkus Reviews, STARRED REVIEWS “Elegant … There is enough magic here to summon wild things even for those who are snug indoors.” - Wall Street Journal Jackie Morris lives in a cottage on the cliffs of Pembrokeshire.
